R1 Black Driver

Yes, there is a Black R1.

To get every potential yard out of your driver you need to achieve the precise combination of launch angle and spin-rate that promotes maximum carry and roll. Yet swing characteristics vary from player to player. R1 allows you to tune three key clubhead parameters so you can customize the club to your swing characteristics to create the launch conditions that promote maximum distance.

With R1 you can 1) Choose from five Face-Angle positions so you can achieve the look you want at address and to help you square the face to the ball at impact.2) Choose from 12 Loft-Sleeve settings between 8° and 12°. 3) Choose from two ways to position the movable Shot-Shape weights to promote a straight flight or a distance-enhancing draw.

We made a point to provide a wide range of loft options, because our analysis of thousands of clubfittings at our MAT-T (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade) revealed that 80% of golfers are playing a driver with the wrong loft for their swing, at the expense of distance.

  • One driver model that can be tuned to fit Tour pros and amateurs alike.
  • 7 standard and 5 upright loft options between 8° and 12° (±2°) to obtain optimal launch angle.
  • 7 face angle options: N/square, open, medium-open, maximum-open, closed, medium-closed, maximum-closed.
  • Shot-shaping movable weights promote a neutral/straight flight or a distance-enhancing draw.
  • Thick-thin crown provides lower and more-forward CG location promoting high launch, fast ball speed and low spin.
  • Inverted Cone Technology milled into the inner side of the clubface expands the portion of the face that delivers high ball speed
  • Improved aerodynamics reduce drag over the head to promote faster clubhead speed.
  • Aldila RIP Phenom 55-gram shaft promotes faster clubhead speed while delivering greater feel than typical ultra-light shafts.

This club is really good, really. The adjustability takes a moment to get used to, I had a Burner Superfast before, this is a whole new concept for me. The feel is also different, but good different. The shaft is shorter, it's a little heavier, and it's not as long as the Superfast. However, in my hands this club is way more accurate, and much easier to hit consistently. With my the Superfast, I wasn't as accurate, even though it went farther when I hit it pure. That is a trade off I will take every time, hitting off the fairway instead of digging it out of the rough. Every time. Currently, this club is still pretty new to me, but with time and practice, I can get the feel for it, and my distance will climb, only this time with the added values of accuracy and consistency. I will also note that I have it lofted down to less than 9 degrees, because I play the windy courses on the plains and prefer a penetrating drive that runs opposed to a balooning drive that carries, also, club face neutral, and heavy weight in the toe. It's not perfect because it's only as good as the golfer holding it, but it's a very good interpretation of what a great driver should be, and well worth the purchase.

Recently I picked the game back up after a 10 year break due to an injury. In the beginning of this season I was dealing with a 15 year old or older model driver and basically put it up after spraying the ball every time and decided to simply go with my 3 wood as my driver. Yesterday I used a newer generation club out of my sons bag and drove a short par 4 253 yards and decided today to go shopping. I collected a lot of opinions from qualified scratch golfers, went to a golf shop and demoed every top brand and landed on the R1. It was so hard for me to break brands but I did nonetheless. Tonight I went to the range and couldn't believe the difference this club made! I bought the biggest bucket of range balls and probably 1/2 way in I was so tired of hitting balls I simply worked on very slow swings and making contact with the ball. To my amazement, there was very little difference in distance and I truly was hitting just about every shot right down the center. I can't believe how accurate and long I am with this club! Looking forward to many great seasons with this club. By the way, following the demo of all the clubs, the golf manager and I agreed to switch the 10 gm and 1 gm toe/heal weights around. I currently have the 10 gm in the heal and my fade was cured in the seconds it took to move two screw weights around! Awesome technology!

I currently own an R11S. It is a great driver and won tournaments with it, but still not used to the color. I tried the black R1 driver at the store, and I was hitting between 10- 20 yards longer on the monitor. I took it out on the course for a couple of rounds and it was surreal. My drives were straight again, and it gave me confidence to rip it at the tee box. It was an amazing round for me, I hit 70% fairways and I scored 8 strokes lower than my handicap. I broke 90 after 3 years. What a club! It is the one for me.

I was excited to get the R1 Driver since I have always purchsed my clubs from Taylor Made. They tend to be longer than most clubs and have worked great in the past, for me, as I am 6'5" tall. I couldn't wait to get out on the course.
Boy, was I disappointed as this club is short, beyond average club length short. If you are tall this is not the club for you. And even though I have only used it once the store would not allow me to return it and I have sent two emails to Customer Service with TaylorMade and have not received any response from them.
TaylorMade will not be in my future!

The R1 performs very well, and the adjustability of the driver is second to none. You can tune the club to fit a variety of swing styles and desired shot shapes, and there's great help doing so with instructions and the iPhone app. The ball explodes off the face with a loud whack that's sure to turn heads, and the long light shaft helps increase clubhead speed as well. Nothing against the white version, but I think the black paint job looks much nicer and I hope to see more black color options from Taylormade Golf in the future.

The impossible happened. I'd never ever thought I'd buy a Taylormade driver...ever. I just traded in my Cobra Amp Cell. I played two rounds with my new R1 driver and I hit this long and accurate. I averaged about 295 to 305 with my Cobra. The first round with my R1. I pretty much hit the same yards off the tee. The second round I have made 315 plus yards on 13 holes and made 16 fairways. Missing just two, (due to my error).

I can also shape my shots very easily and with accuracy. Much easier than my Cobra. I'm glad I demoed the R1 driver. Well done Taylormade... Well done!
