ATV Wedge

Article #

Wedges have traditionally been designed to specialize in two or three types of shots, forcing compromises in others. The ATV (All-Terrain Versatility) wedge was created to handle a multitude of shots, course conditions and swing types. Chips, pitches, explosion shots, out of the rough, off hardpan, on flop shots and bump-and-runs – the ATV sole is uniquely designed to excel at each one.

How the ATV sole interacts with turf, rough and sand on a wide variety of shots was tested thoroughly on tour and with computer modeling. Every curve, angle and nuance serving a purpose impacting the club’s versatility. And each ATV is subtly different depending on the loft.

Visually, the ATV sole is slightly convex (it bows inward instead of outward), and there's significant relief at the toe and heel. That reduces resistance and changes how the sole reacts with turf and sand, depending on how the club is positioned and how much the face is opened contingent upon the typr of shot being played.

You won’t find a bounce number on the ATV clubhead because the sole takes on different bounces depending on how you position the club for the type of shot you’re hitting and how much you open the face.

Equipped with Lamkin’s new wedge grip that extends farther down the shaft to provide improved traction when you choke down for added clubhead control.

  • New ATV (All-Terrain Versatility) Sole lets you play all critical shots with one wedge: chip, pitch, flop, explosion from sand, out of the rough, off a tight lie
  • Bounce angle changes depending on how the head and face are positioned
  • New all-milled groove design and micro-texture across the face generates more spin within USGA rules
  • New Lamkin wedge grip extends farther down the shaft for improved traction when choking down
  • New Tour-Inspired shapes with a beautiful non-plated Tour Satin finish

Comments about TaylorMade ATV Wedge:

I just got my new ATV wedge in 56', I was really amazed. My very first chip went straight and hit the flag. The ability of the wedge to generate back spin and check the ball was awesome, I even got a little back spin my first day out with it. While I have used my Rocket Blades sand wedge for months and enjoy it, this wedge makes it pail in comparison. The marketing is really right about having two clubs in one too. When I opened the face for the flop shot, it was clean and crisp. The leading edge of this club has a very low profile and its ability to pick/hit a ball cleanly off a very tight lie was really amazing. I think you could chip off a green or a kart path with this club and still get good direction and back spin without a worry of sculling the ball.
If the club has a down side, it seems to mark very easily. After my first day of use there were several marks on the face, were my Rocket Blades club has none after months of use???? I'm not sure why.

    Comments about TaylorMade ATV Wedge:

The sole is too thick for lob shots resulting in blades on those delicate thin chips around the green where you need to be able to cut under the ball. It wasn't as versatile as advertised.

    Comments about TaylorMade ATV Wedge:

I tried the ATV wedges only as an afterthought because I needed to fill new gaps after switching my irons from Pings to the new Rocketbladez. Since the ATV's come in about 10 different lofts I thought I'd try them instead of being stuck with the standard 50, 55 and 60 RBladez wedges. I couldn't be happier and I never expected them to be so versatile.

Let me get more specific. I had been addicted to some old wedges (56 and 61 degree) with legendary and now-banned square grooves, which I thought were the sine qua non of backspin design. Still, I found I needed another specialty wedge for safe escapes from fluffy sand in greenside bunkers, a 64 degree flopper with a full scalloped sole to prevent digging in. It's a great club -- FOR ONE SINGLE USE ONLY! But it's useless out of tight lies, hardpan or any grass flop shots save out of the fluffiest of lies.

When I saw the half scallop of the ATV's sole and did a little research on their grinds, I quickly realized that the ATV's sole would prevent digging, while they could also be opened for flops on hard pan or tight lies in spite of their bounce. Close them down for punches, pick them out of high rough, the ATV's can achieve all of these shots regardless of which loft you pick.

Their versatility has caused me to change which wedge I hit in each situation. I now like to hit flops with an opened 56, not the 64. Longer bunker shots are also much easier now with a normally struck 50 picked clean. Meanwhile, an open faced 64 will pretty much go straight up and straight down, but no more than 25 yards. And as far as backspin goes, the micro-etching on the ATV faces seems as good to me as the vaunted Cleveland RTX wedges.

So in short order I went from having no expectations for these clubs to preferring them above everything else in my bag. If I were to change anything with them, I think I might switch to a LOWER lofted mix. As it is they all go high and drop on a dime with little spin. I game a 50, 56, and 64 which produces full yardages of 115, 90 and about 45. I think a 60 would probably be fine and produce a full yardage of about 60 yards, while a 48 would push me to 120 and a 54 would go about 100. That's perhaps a better spread.

For shots around the greens, the lofts don't matter as much since you can open any one of them easily and still hit the touch shots you want.

            Comments about TaylorMade ATV Wedge:

The best part of my game is wedge work. So I decided to find a quality wedge that could preform on all parts of all golf courses. This is definitely that club. It is great on tight lies and even better when you open up the club face for flop shots. I credit this club for taking 3-4 shots off of my handicap. This is by far the best all around wedge on the market. It is so good I ordered the 60 and 54 degree wedges.

This is a great wedge and is very versatile. The sole definately works well. It feels great and looks good. The wedge does wear rather quickly, however. the only problem that I have is hitting full swing flops. I shank it often on full flops but that might be me more than the club. Greenside flops are no problem. Love this wedge.

I've used several different wedges and this by far out performs any other that I've used. I purchased a 60 degree and wouldnt change a thing about it. The flop and chip with this wedge is remarkable. Out of the sand, it performs well.Spin is nice as well, making the ball sit upon impact.

I purchased a 56 degree wedge. My first round it saved me at least 5 strokes. The sole grind makes a flop shot so easy. I have a room full of name brand wedges that don't compare to this one. It is very easy to use in all situations. I will be adding more ATV's.
